Chapter 68 · Month 36 · Starting a Family

The Long Walk

The question of who takes the leave

Oldest line first — the newest line is at the bottom.

Penny teacher
I looked at your leave form on the table this morning — the half-filled one with September pencilled in. We can't both take it, and I've been pretending that maths works out when it clearly doesn't.
Algy designer
It doesn't work out, no. If I take September you're back in a classroom at six weeks, and if you do, you're the one at home alone doing the doctor's letters in my handwriting. I don't know which of those I'm more scared of, and that's the honest version.
Penny teacher
So the honest version is two fears and no plan. I want to know what you actually want, not what's survivable — if September was free and the money was fine, who's holding the baby?
Algy designer
Hold on, that's not a fair question — who's holding the baby's a whole week of my life, not a Tuesday. Fine: me. September's mine, the leave form's filled and signed, and I hand it in Monday at nine. There, it's out.

Whose turn was it to go first?
