Chapter 6 The First Message

Month 3 · Meeting the Friends

A phone left face-up on the table during dinner

09:53 UTC
Algy designer
That profile line about the worst Thai in the city being worth it for the company — I've thought about it twice today, which is once more than I've thought about invoicing. Are we doing Saturday at two-thirty, or does the $32 menu need witnesses?
Penny teacher
Two-thirty at the Thai place, and I'll be the one with a list. Leave the phone in the other pocket and I'll believe the profile line.
Algy designer
Right — the song you mentioned, the one you can't listen to on the bus without crying, that's the one I'll have ready. I'll put it on before we get there and everything, so it actually holds, and you can see me do the boring bit where I finish a thought.
Penny teacher
Thursday at 7:30, then, and I'll bring the tissues and a list of reasons that's not complaints. You'll get the boring bit tomorrow.
Chapter 7 The Night Before

Month 3 · Meeting the Friends

What to call each other when introducing the other to a colleague

11:47 UTC
Algy designer
It's 11:40 and I'm still up because I can't work out what I call you when Dev's mate asks — "my girlfriend" feels like a badge I haven't earned yet. Also, honestly, I'm scared of getting the word wrong and giving Chloe a reason to file it.
Penny teacher
"Girlfriend" is fine, it's not a badge, it's just a word. I'm nervous too — I've been rehearsing "this is Algy" in the staff room mirror like a lunatic.
Algy designer
'Girlfriend' — grand, I'll practise it in the mirror too, the bathroom one has a chip so I'll be saying it to myself in fragments. But if Dev announces us at the pub like a raffle result, do I correct him or just get the next round in?
Penny teacher
Correct him quietly, once, then buy the round — it's Dev, he'll announce the crisps next. And Algy, it's 1am, neither of us is sleeping, is she.

Month 3 · Meeting the Friends

A friend who does not like the relationship

00:00 UTC
Algy designer
I've been here since twenty past — ordered a water, it's gone flat, and the waiter's now on first-name terms with me. Thursday at 7:30, do I bring anything or just the tissues and the list?
Penny teacher
Does the list count if half of it's about you? Bring nothing, I've got the tissues and the bar tab's mine for the first round — the rest you can owe me.
Algy designer
Can I ask what's actually on your list — like the honest half? Because mine's mostly 'sort the invoice, mention the yoga receipt', and I'm choosing to believe yours is shorter.
Penny teacher
Honestly? I went to Chloe's on Tuesday and spent twenty minutes defending the $11.40 wedding fund like it mattered. Then I cried at a bus advert about sofas, so I'm not the reliable one this week.
Algy designer
Chloe thinks I'm a project, doesn't she. I'd rather hear that from you than work it out from the way she says my name at the door.
Penny teacher
She says your name like it's a follow-up appointment. One more glass and we're at two hours past the parking meter, which is my way of saying yes.
Chapter 9 Dinner With Her Parents

Month 5 · Meeting the Families

A parent who is polite but not convinced

02:04 UTC
Algy designer
Right, so — this is a $9 bottle from the corner shop, which I'm told is a faux pas, so I've hidden the receipt in the hedge. Sunday nerve is fine, this is just a dinner, isn't it?
Penny teacher
Dad's Robert, and he'll ask about the invoice before he asks your name — he's not cold, he's just slow to trust numbers. Mum's already set four places, so ring the bell.
Algy designer
Work's freelance design, mostly identity stuff — a bakery logo last month, that's $400, and the invoice thing's really a timing issue. I could ring about it Monday, or set up a reminder, or honestly write it out for you.
Penny teacher
Dad, that bakery logo's genuinely good — ask him to show you. Take the roast potatoes out, they're done.
Algy designer
The thing is, I'm not sure I'll be steady money for about a year — maybe two — and I'd rather you heard that from me at this table than worked it out later. What I can promise is I'll tell her before it's a problem, not after.
Chapter 10 His Mother's Voice Notes

Month 5 · Meeting the Families

The relative who says the wrong thing at the table

04:05 UTC
Penny teacher
Sorry — that's Mum. She's started sending voice notes instead of texts, and this one's already at four minutes. Give me two seconds.
Algy designer
No — wait, don't play that, it's got my name in it about six times and Dad's hedge in it twice. Okay. Fine. Play it. But I'm counting the seconds.
Penny teacher
Twenty-six seconds in and she's asking why you haven't brought me to see the hedge. I genuinely don't know what to say to that, Algy.
Algy designer
Mum's already planning the hedge, so say yes and it's not a lie. The thing nobody's told you — Dad left the year I turned nine, and Mum's never once put him down for it. She just kept the garden and made it very difficult to feel sorry for her, and that's honestly where I get it from.
Chapter 11 The Misunderstanding

Month 5 · Meeting the Families

The sibling who compares every relationship to their marriage

06:06 UTC
Penny teacher
Right. Well, that's a lot to hand me on a Sunday. Your mum's a better woman than anyone's given her credit for.
Algy designer
She is. And I've been telling people she cries at the garden centre over the hydrangeas, which is true but undersells her. It's the same trick as me — keep busy, make a joke, don't let anyone feel sorry for you.
Penny teacher
You've gone quiet on me. What did you read into what I said, because I said a lot more than I meant to.
Algy designer
It's not the hedge thing. I keep waiting for you to compare me to Mark and come up short — the salary, the six-month anniversary. And if I'm honest, I do that too. I do that all the time.
Chapter 12 The Bad Day latest

Month 6 · Meeting the Families

Dinner with her parents and the question about intentions

08:06 UTC
Algy designer
Sunday's going to be me in your dad's kitchen basically with a work-in-progress. I've been on my feet since eight and the invoice still says $1,240 owed, so I'm not at my best.
Penny teacher
Give me the invoice and I'll do the chasing call Monday, nine sharp, while you're still asleep. And say the working-in-progress bit to my dad out loud, because he'll like that better than a finished man.
Algy designer
I'm not going to argue with nine sharp. It was worse than I let on — Mr Fennel's invoice went out with the old logo on it and I only noticed at four. Handing you that is the actual plan.
Penny teacher
And what I need is that when I say I'm tired of carrying the plan, you don't just hand me the invoice and joke. Sunday, tell me the real thing about your dad, no hedge.
