Chapter 67 · Month 35 · Starting a Family

The Good News

A test on the sink and the decision to wait

Oldest line first — the newest line is at the bottom.

Algy designer
Penny, the test's still on the sink drying — and before we decide who hears what, I need to say it: I bought it at the corner shop with toilet rolls and a bag of the wrong dog food. That's the small thing I'm scared of ending up as — the errand, not the dad.
Penny teacher
The wrong dog food's still by the bin, so at least the test outranks it. But you said "the number" like there's a version of Saturday where Chloe tells her, and I need to know if that's the plan or the fear talking.
Algy designer
I don't know — and I mean that, not the polite version. If Chloe tells her it comes out flat on a Tuesday, whereas Saturday you say it and I'm standing next to you, it's real. $14.60 isn't the worry; it's the month after July where I can't say when the next invoice clears.
Penny teacher
Saturday, eleven, we tell Chloe, and nobody else until we've said it to Susan together — that's the part I need, not the invoice. Put the test in the cupboard and we'll leave it alone.
