Chapter 44 · Month 30 · Starting a Family

The Conversation

The first real conversation about children

Oldest line first — the newest line is at the bottom.

Penny teacher
I've been thinking about children — properly, not the hazy version. There's a test in my bag that I bought next to a two-litre of bleach and a loo roll, and I've been walking past that chemist for a week.
Algy designer
Sorry — I did that thing where I apologise for the car park, and actually the thing I'm sorry for is leaving the whole thinking to you. Not the bleach, the test, none of it a joke. Can I ask what you actually picture?
Penny teacher
What I picture is me doing it alone, at 2am, with the blackout blind, because you'll be at the studio finishing an invoice. That's the bit that frightens me — not the crying, the fact that I'd just crack on and not say anything.
Algy designer
What frightens me is the $417 kind of man turning up instead — the one who's five days late and then brilliant for an hour and gone. I don't want to be the treat in my own kid's week.
Penny teacher
Then let's put a date on it instead of a fear: the first Sunday of next month, after lunch, we actually sit down and talk children — and I'll say the plain thing before I've tidied it.

Whose silence about it is worse?
