Chapter 43 · Month 22 · The Wedding

The Long Walk

A dress that is altered three times

Oldest line first — the newest line is at the bottom.

Penny teacher
The dress fitting is Thursday, and I've already had it altered twice — I'm not doing a third round because your mum's list keeps growing. Tell me honestly: is the table number fixed at eight, or do I need to buy a bigger dress?
Algy designer
Fixed at eight. If your mum adds a ninth, she's sitting on my knee and I'll tell the photographer it's a tradition. Now — chips, or the place with the good soup, because I'm not doing numbers on an empty stomach.
Penny teacher
Don't dodge it with chips — what do you actually want from this wedding, not what gets your mum off the phone at eight? Because I've given you my number and I still don't know if you've got one of your own.
Algy designer
I don't know — and I mean that, not as a dodge. I know the number's eight; what I want past that is a blank, and it's the first thing I've wanted to fill in for myself in years, not for Mum.
Penny teacher
I'm scared of being the only one who's actually thought about any of this. Not the money — the part where I'm the one making the lists and you're the one being surprised by them on the day.
Algy designer
Fair. So here's mine, spelled out, not asked: I don't want to be the man who's a nice surprise on the day. The £8, I mean — eight o'clock, Mum, the lot. Some of that planning has to be mine or it's just me turning up.
Penny teacher
You're right, and it stings — I've been holding the lists because it's faster, which means I've been voting on your behalf. Take the eight o'clock and the guest numbers: your call, your mess, and I'll stay out of it.
Algy designer
I'll take it — and here's the cost of saying yes, so you know it's a real one: it means ringing Mum and telling her the ninth guest is a no. She'll cry, I'll fold, so I need you not to rescue me at eight.
Penny teacher
Not one word at eight — but if she cries, ring me straight after and I'll be the villain in the retelling. The ninth guest still goes; that's my number, not a rescue — four hundred and six means ninety a head, and ninety a head doesn't stretch to her.
