Chapter 38 · Month 21 · The Wedding

The Relatives

A seating plan involving two people who do not speak

Oldest line first — the newest line is at the bottom.

Penny teacher
Up here, next to your dad, we've got Susan. Your mum and my dad at one table — that's two people who've never spoken, and mine's six guests over. Do I move him or do you ring her?
Algy designer
Easy — I move Mark and his wife down to table four, Susan sits with your mum instead, and nobody has to ring anyone or admit the two of them have never managed a sentence. What's the catering number? If we're feeding six extra I want to know before my invoicing face goes on.
Penny teacher
Avoidance has a cost and it's $34 a head, so six extra is $204 of not ringing her. Move Mark down if you like, but somebody's calling my mother tonight — I'd rather it was me than the bill.
