Chapter 32 · Month 18 · The Engagement

Telling the Families

Telling her parents before the date is announced

Oldest line first — the newest line is at the bottom.

Penny teacher
The chocolate's in the cupboard above the kettle, the good tin, not the decoy one — and she's already planned a 60-person menu before I've finished the word "engaged." Do we tell my parents before we announce a date, or do they hear it from Mark like everything else?

So Mum sent a four-minute voice note — four — which she played on speaker while I was still saying hello. Her verdict: "Lovely, but ask her properly and don't put the ring near a sink."
Penny teacher
She's not wrong about the sink, and I'd like that noted. But my dad is going to hear the date from Mark at a barbecue, and I'd rather not have that as the story.

Then we go together, Saturday, before a date exists to leak — I'll do the talking. And the ring's in the biscuit tin, so I can't lose it, or find it.

Who is still not saying it plainly?
