Chapter 31 · Month 18 · The Engagement

The Proposal

A proposal that goes wrong in a car park

Oldest line first — the newest line is at the bottom.

Algy designer
Hold on — the restaurant's shut, there's a laminated sign on the door saying closed for a private party. So it's you, me, and a car park with one working door.
Penny teacher
Sensible or not, that ring's currently in your mum's hand and not mine, and I mind that more than I'd like to admit. There's an envelope in the glovebox — my half of Sunday's deposit, all $950 — and we do the rest before we leave this car park.
Algy designer
Right, my list then: one, say the true thing — I want to marry you, not because it's Tuesday. Two, get the ring off my mum. Three, apologise properly, later, without the jokes.
Penny teacher
Then get the ring before Thursday and ask again at the flat, with the car door shut properly. Yes, Algy — I'm saying yes now, so you can stop being brave in a car park.

Who should apologise first?
