The Misunderstanding

A guest who was not invited

Penny teacher
Just so we're clear on the card, since I've been staring at the same one on our table: the seating chart became a diplomatic incident when your mum put Mark next to my dad and my dad hasn't spoken to him since the christening. Tell me you haven't sent out the invitations yet — because I need to know how many guests I'm taking my name off for.
Algy designer
That's not the card, Penny — ours says "bring a savoury, 2pm," and it's still in the drawer under the birthday candles. The invites went out Tuesday, forty-one of them, so if a name's coming off a table it's Dad's, and I'll make that call, not you.
Penny teacher
You've gone quiet since the forty-one — what did you read into it? And before you answer, I've got a cheese straw recipe that makes about sixty, so let's at least eat something while we do this badly.
Algy designer
Honestly? I don't know if forty-one is us being generous or me being a disappointment with a stamp. That's the insecure bit, out loud, and I'd rather say it than let it sit there with the cheese straws.
