Chapter 2 · Month 1 · The First Dates

The First Date

A first date that runs out of things to say at 8:40

Oldest line first — the newest line is at the bottom.

Algy designer
I've been here since twenty past, but I'll pretend this glass of water just arrived. How was the bus, or did you walk it?
Penny teacher
Bus, because it rained at ten past and I don't own a decent umbrella. You've been here fifteen minutes, Algernon, the water's gone flat.
Algy designer
Flat water's fine, I know every waiter's name here now. Do you always plan the walking, or was today a one-off?
Penny teacher
Honestly? I cried in the station toilets on Tuesday over a laminated timetable. So yes, I plan the walking — it's the only part of my week that behaves.
Algy designer
That's the most honest thing anyone's told me in a bar, and I've been in this bar a lot. I'd have cried over the timetable too — mine's just three buses and a guess.
Penny teacher
Well, that's two of us who can't organise a bus between us. I'll have another glass of the red — and so will you, because we're apparently staying past nine.
