Chapter 19 · Month 10 · Moving In

The Flat Viewing

The deposit and who can actually cover it

Oldest line first — the newest line is at the bottom.

Penny teacher
Six weeks on my lease, and here's the sum: my deposit's $1,900, yours is a damp wall and a landlord who won't ring back. So we can afford this place if I'm the one who says yes to it.
Algy designer
This one's over budget and I'm in love with the light, straight through that bay window at four o'clock. I don't know — whether I can cover half the deposit, I mean, not the light.
Penny teacher
Damp in the back bedroom, forty minutes on two buses, and $1,650 a month. The light's lovely, Algy, and the light doesn't pay rent.
Algy designer
What if we take the small back one on Fennick, $1,380? The kitchen's a corridor and the light's rubbish after three, but it's mine as much as yours.
Penny teacher
Yes — on one condition: your half of the $1,900 is in a jar by Friday, not a promise. Agreed, so we apply for Fennick, and the corridor kitchen's fine. You were right about the light, by the way.
