Chapter 171 · Month 61 · Starting a Family

The Good News

The first real conversation about children

Oldest line first — the newest line is at the bottom.

The test's on the table, not the fridge, so it isn't a number yet — that's the thing about children I keep tripping over. You said one Friday a month and this one's real, and I still don't know if we're telling anyone before Saturday.
Penny teacher
Speaking of which — what did you actually hear, Algy? Because I've been reading the card and you've gone quiet, and quiet in this flat usually means you've decided something on my behalf.
Algy designer
I heard it properly — and Saturday's already Chloe's, that's the cost. Her face at eleven will be real, so I need to know if we're saying "trying" or saying the whole thing out loud.
Penny teacher
Chloe gets the truth at eleven, but I'm telling my mum first — she'll hear it in my voice on Sunday and get it out of me anyway. And if you're at that till again, get bread, not just the test.
