Chapter 164 · Month 60 · Starting a Family

The Long Walk

The first married argument, about something small

Oldest line first — the newest line is at the bottom.

Penny teacher
I've been sitting on something for a week and I'd rather say it out here than at the kitchen table. The test in the bathroom and the chip shop bag in the same basket — I keep waiting to feel something and mostly I feel watched by a jar.
Algy designer
That's fair, and it's not a small thing. I've been checking that jar every morning like it owes me something, and I put it there — so it's mine to knock off first. Want to keep walking or sit on the bench by the gate?
Penny teacher
I want to know what you actually want, not what makes this easier for me. If the twelve weeks were just yours, no guilt, no jar — would you take them?
Algy designer
Twelve weeks, yeah — but I'd want one morning a week where nobody asks me what I'm doing with them, including me. Now hand me the pen and I'll stop being noble and eat the chips.

Whose apology is actually owed?
