Chapter 144 · Month 55 · Starting a Family

The Long Walk

The first married argument, about something small

Oldest line first — the newest line is at the bottom.

Penny teacher
The thing I've been sitting on for a week is that the childminder's $310 is the easy bit. What keeps me up is you doing the sums on the back of the electricity bill and not telling me — is that going to be the pattern?
Algy designer
No — and I'm not going to make a joke about the electricity bill to get out of that. The pattern's me doing sums alone at midnight because a bill feels like a private thing to fail at. That's the bit I'd like to stop.
Penny teacher
Then stop at the bill and tell me the number, even the ugly one. What do you actually want here, Algy — me home that year, or the money?
Algy designer
Both, and that's the argument — I want you home and I don't want to be the reason we can't afford it. So: $310 goes on the form Saturday, and if the invoices don't land by March, I'm the one who says so first.

Whose apology is actually owed?
