Chapter 122 · Month 49 · Starting a Family

The Misunderstanding

The first real conversation about children

Oldest line first — the newest line is at the bottom.

Penny teacher
The fridge list has £104 on it and my name is not on that line, so before we ring her — is this the bit where I find out you've been quietly deciding things again?
Algy designer
No, because a list with two names on it is a conversation, and I've been doing a lot of those by myself lately. Put me on that line — but first, are we ringing her because we've decided, or because we're both too tired to say the real thing?
Penny teacher
We're ringing her because of the real thing, and the real thing is I checked the calendar twice this week hoping I'd counted wrong. You've gone quiet since the email — what did you read into it?
Algy designer
The email said "if it's happened, come back in six weeks" — and I read it as them being nice to me, not to us. I do that sometimes: I hear the polite version of a sentence before anyone's finished it.

Whose silence about it is worse?
