The Long Walk

The first married argument, about something small

Oldest line first — the newest line is at the bottom.

Penny teacher
Two hundred on the childminder line and I'll write it in biro now, not Thursday — but £310 is her figure and yours to argue down. Say the number you'll ask for and I'll stop assuming the worst.
Algy designer
Two-forty a week, four days, and I'll say it to her face rather than round it. I keep assuming the worst too — that's why I joke before I've listened properly.
Penny teacher
The receipt's still in my coat from the shop — test and a plunger, one basket, £11.40, and the woman at the till didn't blink. What do you actually want to happen here, Algy? Not the plan — the thing you'd want if nobody was watching.
Algy designer
What I want is a Friday where nobody's counting — no form, no figure, and you not bracing for me to say something stupid. And £11.40 for a plunger is daylight robbery, but I'd have bought it twice.

Whose apology is actually owed?
