Chapter 116 · Month 48 · Starting a Family

The Long Walk

The in-laws' new expectations

Oldest line first — the newest line is at the bottom.

Penny teacher
This Saturday's card from your mum — the table for four at seven, "hearing our news" underlined twice. She booked it before we'd told anyone, and I've been sitting on that for a week.
Algy designer
I'm sorry — for the table, and for saying yes to Mum before asking you. That's the row you should be having with me. What do you actually want me to do about Saturday: cancel it, or go and say nothing?
Penny teacher
Go, but I want to know which version of us we're bringing. If your mum asks straight out at seven on Saturday, what do you actually want to say — because I've never heard you say the wish out loud.
Algy designer
Then here's the wish, out loud, on a park bench: I want to be somebody's dad who's still there in five years. And I'll ring Mum tomorrow, cancel the table, and we do this at our own pace.
