The Long Walk

The first married argument, about something small

Penny teacher
The list's in my coat pocket and it's been there a week, so I'll say it out here where I can't fold it back up. I mind that I'm the one who remembers Monday, and I'd like to not be, once.
Algy designer
Right — Monday's mine then, in pen, not on a list I'd lose behind the Rice Krispies. And the mousetrap's still holding its cheese, so you're not the only one keeping something going that isn't working.
Penny teacher
Mousetrap's a fair point, I'll give you that one. But I need a real answer, not a joke with cheese in it — do you actually want this, the nursery and the money and the Monday, or am I arranging a life you're agreeing to?
Algy designer
I want it — and I'll say the true thing since we're further than I planned: some nights I'm on the internet at midnight reading about this, and you're asleep, and I've got nobody to tell. Monday's mine, the $870's ours, and that's not me agreeing to your life, that's me in it.

Whose apology is actually owed?
